Counseling Support
Welcome!
Welcome to the Lafayette Elementary School Counseling Program! The counseling program supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of all students. We believe children learn best when they feel safe, connected, valued, and ready to learn.
School counseling is a collaborative partnership with students, families, teachers, and staff to help every child develop the skills they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
How We Support Students
The school counseling program provides a variety of services throughout the school year, including:
-
Classroom social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons
-
Small group counseling
-
Short-term individual student support
-
Collaboration with families and school staff
-
Problem-solving, conflict resolution, and friendship skills
-
Support during school transitions and challenging situations
-
Referrals to community resources when appropriate
Our goal is to help students build confidence, resilience, healthy relationships, and problem-solving skills while fostering a positive school climate where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Partnering with Families
Families are important partners in supporting student success. We encourage open communication and collaboration and are here to support students as they learn, grow, and navigate the elementary school years.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or would like to learn more about the school counseling program.
Mental Health Advocate
Every BVSD elementary school has a Mental Health Advocate (MHA) to support acute mental health needs of students through short-term intervention and/or support with referral to outside mental health supports. Students are referred to the MHA by the school counselors when immediate needs for support arise (such as recent grief or trauma impacting a student) or when mental health needs require more intensive or ongoing support than school counselors are able to provide through brief, short-term counseling.
Tiered Support
Through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, we provide more targeted and intensive help for students who need it -- both academically and social/emotionally.
Universal
We strive to support all students with universal programming.
Targeted
When a student is struggling, our teachers, school counselors and psychologists give more targeted help.
Intensive
If targeted support does not work or a student is in crisis our educators employ more intensive interventions.
Meet Our Team
Elementary Counseling
A comprehensive elementary school counselor provides education, prevention and intervention services in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development supports. It is important to note that elementary counselors are not therapists; rather they are professional educators with a mental health perspective. They typically spend the majority of their time working on universal instruction and working with all students. The elementary counselors will work in collaboration with administration, teachers, the mental health team and parents to determine the needs of all students within each building.
