Gifted and Talented

At Lafayette Elementary, we believe in providing enriching opportunities for all students.  We focus on identification of students’ strengths whether that be academic or the arts or leadership.  We work closely with the district guidelines to ensure that students, teachers and parents are part of the process.  We believe in fostering the whole child.

Lafayette Elementary is a gifted and talented focus school.  We provide enriching learning experiences for all students.

Our school has a gifted and talented teacher and a gifted and talented advisor that works with identified students k - 5.  We provide programming to help meet the needs of our identified students.  We offer advanced math programming for grades 4 and 5 as well as math extension opportunities in grades K - 3.   We also work on Social/emotional learning and literacy enrichment during our WIN time in all grades.  We provide professional development for our teachers in depth and complexity strategies that can be implemented across content areas.

We also provide enrichment opportunities for all students during after school programming.  We have programs like Choir, Chess Club, Shakespeare Club, Math Mania, Sewing Club, Battle of the Books, Destination Imagination and Newspaper Club.

We have competitions for all students: National Scripps Spelling Bee for intermediate students, and a school level spelling bee for primary students. Noetic Math Contest for students in grade 2 - 5, this year we will have a Geography Bee for 4th and 5th graders.

Boulder Valley School District

BVSD schools provide programming for Gifted and Talented (GT) students based on their identified needs and in accordance with district identification policy, which is based on a body of evidence. The BVSD Gifted & Talented (GT) Office supports schools and stakeholders, offers professional development, and oversees school-based programming.  A wealth of information is available on the BVSD.org Gifted and Talented page.

The Gifted & Talented Advisor (GTA) is the primary advocate for students, communications, and programming in the school.

Students may be identified as Gifted & Talented in one or more of the following areas:

  • General or specific intellectual ability
  • Specific academic aptitude
  • Creative or productive thinking
  • Leadership abilities
  • Visual arts, performing arts, musical or psychomotor abilities

Schools follow the BVSD Acceleration policy when making decisions about subject or grade level acceleration for students.  Some highly advanced gifted children may enter kindergarten or first grade early through  the BVSD Early Access policy.

The classroom teacher is the primary provider of advanced academic services to students. Programming is documented in the student's Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) or, at the secondary level, (ICAP). Programming may include academic, enrichment,  and affective (social emotional) supports and extensions.

BVSD sponsors district-wide enrichment activities.  These are open to students whether they are identified as GT or not. Learn more on the BVSD.org Gifted and Talented page.
